MMA film 'Spirit of Fight' pays homage to Bruce Lee

It has been a very long while since I have posted anything. Forgive me as the team and I have been working in development for our latest project for the last 6 months. The above is a special tribute to the legendary Bruce Lee shot waaayy ahead of the feature film due only in production in 2011. Details here:

Shot in 2 days, the above is a test shoot shot ahead of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) feature film "Spirit of Fight" in tribute to the 70th Birth Anniversary of one of the greatest martial artist known the world over - Bruce Lee.

"Spirit of Fight" will only be in production in 2011. Footage here will not be seen in the actual feature film.

The story follows JIN - starring Danny Chan 陳國坤（陈国坤） - a martial artist who yearns to fight in a MMA arena. Learning from both victory and defeat; he learns to exceed himself and truly understand the meaning of the Spirit of Fight.

For the purpose of this test shoot, the following were used: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 7D and Panasonic AG3D-A1.

As oppose to perhaps the letter N, the letter after M. Nelly, Neo... not much. How about L? Lenny... J is not bad, especially if you are Jennifer.

So a quick math taking M, against the number of names available, against 26 letters, not including names that start with !. It should be about 21.4%; that M rules.

So if you are thinking of changing your name, how about on that starts with M? Mandy sounds good.... oh... Mandy Moore!

The Pursuit of Happiness and then there is poker... (this blogpost is also called 开心就好)

I have been playing Poker (Texas Hold-em) for the entire weekend (real life and online) and also watching the World Series of Poker, totally glued to the excitement. It is reverting to see a young 20 something online player beat out the professionals and winning all those multi-million dollar. It all seems so easy, sit, play a few hands, be on TV, then hey i-am-a-millionaire! It is admiration and lots of envy. I cannot help but think, I could be that guy... Come on! You would too! Now if you don’t gamble and do not understand the game of poker, this entry will not mean anything to you but that actually it may represent that this is going to matter quite a lot.

I will try to explain the game of Texas Hold-em (skip this next bit if you know what the game is about). Made famous by that straight face Matt Damon in the movie Rounders way back. Simple enough game to understand, which is why it is so popular. Did James Bond played poker? Only in latest Casino Royale actually, James used to play Baccarat in the original.

Poker is a game traditionally a five card game where players with the ‘best hand’ (winning hand) takes a community pot (lots of money) bet in by all the players at the same table. Texas Hold ‘em is one of the most popular variation of the poker game concept. The player with the winning hand: 5 cards that may contain pairs like Aces, 2 pairs (AA, KK and one more card called the Kicker which can be any card), full house (AAA,KK), straights (A,2,3,4,5), royal flush (A,K,Q,J,10)...etc.

If you seriously have no concept of this, it makes the next few paragraph very hard to explain. Of course, please go ahead and wiki it! You will get a clearer picture... or just play a few hands with some friends. Or just skip it and move on to what I really have to say. lol.)

You want to win of course, so to play you are first dealt with 2 cards, no one can see these cards. You play with the players on the same table (2 - 9 people) not the dealer (this is not playing against the casinos, which in theory makes it a level playing field). After the cards are dealt, the betting begins. And the fun part begins because unlike other games, you can bluff! And you are given a life line as you can always fold - throw those miserable hands away and live to fight another day - when you feel that someone else is going to win the pot.

Everyone bets after 2 cards are given to each player, puts money in the middle where the winner takes all, raises (up the value of the bet made before you) or checks (passes to the next person to bet an amount) or you can always fold (throw away your chance).

Then 3 cards are dealt in the middle, this is called ‘The Flop’, everyone on the table shares these 3 cards and try to make the ‘best hand’ (or the winning hand with five cards. The Royal Flush A, K, Q, J, 10 is the best five hands possible) and wins the pot of money that everyone puts out in the middle.

As this is Texas Hold ‘em and what makes it is so entertaining is that another card is dealt in the middle called ‘The Turn’. Now the winning player may not be you anymore. Even if you had Ace Ace at first, which will probably make the best five cards at the end of the game - you may not necessarily be the winner because the best five cards may shift to another player on the fourth card.

Of course, to make matters more exciting and so watchable for TV junkies - there is another community card (a fifth card) is dealt in the middle for everyone to use to make the best hand, this is called ‘The River’.

Sounds complicated? There are seven cards you can play with and you want to make the five best cards and you ‘seemingly’ have 2 chances with the fourth and fifth community cards which causes you to bet like a mad person.

It is a game that seem to be a game of fair chance (you can fold, fold! Now!) but actually requires a deep level of skill and experience and the difference between a good player and a world class professional is well ‘they’ say ‘no luck involve’. There is more to the game like posting the big blind and small blinds and antes, so if you are really interested go check out wikipedia. Thanks, sorry for this bad explanation.

It is deeply psychological (Level playing field, play the players, you have a chance to fold - not like other game based on luck... blab blab), which is why i enjoy playing and watching it so much. Out of nine players only one person can be dealt with the best hand. And if you win a hand in a nine player game that is $100 x 9 = $900!

You are given 2 cards to play with and your cards is Ace Ace, the mind automatically says to you “You are the Winner! Push all your chips in” but you are suppressing it because you are playing with 5 cards’ not 2 card.

And to make matters worst, everyone ‘shares’ the five cards dealt. and you get jittery and all the tells in the world appear because even with Ace Ace (best pair possible before the flop, you can be beaten by the Royal Flush (A, K, Q, J, 10) so someone may have the other Ace in the beginning and the community cards comes K, Q, J. You are in trouble because if the fourth card is a 10. Your Ace Ace is no longer the best hand because that idiot with like Ace 2 (which is like the smallest Ace-d pocket cards) can beat you and steal the big fat pot from you.

So what do you do when you have Ace Ace - you poker professional? Your mind suppresses the excitement because you will think ‘no other idiot will have these cards, if I will calmly all-in (push all your hard earn money) into the middle and if they are foolish enough they will bet and after all the cards come out, I will emerge the winner. Eat that suckers!

So simple to win so much money, especially with so little effort just sitting around pushing some poker chips around. But what happens when you are dealt with the thrash cards like 7,2 or strange playable cards like K,3? Fold them? Bluff your way until ‘The River’ and keep your fingers and toes crossed?

So what is this blog about? Getting one to play poker? What an idiot!

After playing about 2 overnighters and almost the whole Sunday, my brain was bursting - let’s just say I didn’t lose, well... I won (let me brag a little, this is my blog post.) And the problem with me is that I remember details, sometimes too much. What happened in the game? Who did stupid raises? Who won? Who lose? Where did the losers seat? How they won me when I had a KK? How they lost? Who they lost to? The faces of my opponents when I sucked them all in with my hidden full house...lol.

I wanted to eat but the adrenaline was still going, going. Then I stopped. Just stopped whatever I was doing and sat staring at the TV playing some strange programme that no one in the room was really watching.

Damn. Why am I so happy?

Is it because I almost lost money but didn’t? Or is it because I won? It is because I have gotten newfound respect and possible admiration? Or is it because I have caused my opponents to now start a new blood feud for a rematch the next time around? Or is it simply because I sat around, pushing chips around and won some cash?

Is what I just went through a measure of my pursue of happiness?

Doesn’t everyone want what those professional poker players have? The Fs in LiFe? Fun, Fame and Fortune? And watching them win millions seemed so easy, they sit, try to look stoned, move a little.. win. Does this fall under sloth or greed in the Seven Deadly Sins? Maybe Pride? Maybe all of it most likely. Of course, we didn’t see much of the players at the final table struggle the last 4 - 5 days before, about 12 hours a day, trying to get to that position to try to win it all. Maybe tournament poker players are not really that bad - it is the cash game professionals! They are the real sharks!

Film and television (well all the media, ads and pretty much everything that surrounds us - nice iPhone!) paints such a romantic picture for hard working people. People who work for their money. Real people who have flaws and mistakes and will never see millions in their lifetime but are always given ‘The Hope’.

Being in the creative and media industry, it is all about ‘The Hope’. Mass market advertisements, commercials, bus stops ads, supermarket trolleys and credit card roadshows... We sell you ‘The Hope’ so that ‘Our Hope’ can be fulfilled. And the ‘suck out’ cycle never ends.

So what is this long blogpost about? What is your point? I have better things to do than hear you ramble on and on? If this is your idea of selling me a product or service, tell me how much already!

I never thought much about the pursuit of happiness and what it truly represent... until after a silly game of poker, this is so sad...

“Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” what powerful words echoed in the US Declaration of Independence - our inalienable rights.

Happiness is such a simple, under-rated word that we take so much for granted. (In Singapore, we have that in our pledge, “... so as to achieve happiness...”.)

Why do we try so hard, work so hard and slogged it out? So that at the end of the day we can be what? Happy? Or are those the inalienable rights of the people of the great United States and since it is not written so clearly and majestically in ours, we do not really deserve to have it. And then, when exactly is the ‘at the end of the day’ for us? When we finally ‘cash out’? When we hit 55 or what 65? Oh wait, the dealer needs to keep some in the pot - ‘The House’ will always win.

The bigger question is actually this - Do we actually deserve to attain our state of happiness?

I mean in all seriousness, if we can bet $3.50 on a lottery ticket and become a millionaire, why don’t we all just do that. The odds for the group one prize pool is 8,145,060 to 1. The odds for hitting a Pair of Aces in Texas Hold ‘em is 220 to 1.

But we don’t bluff our way through life do we? We don’t weight the odds stacked against us and make our decisions? We can’t pretend we have the Aces or the Kings all the time? We have to admit sometimes that even with a full house, someone else may have the four of the kind and beat us to the pot. We can not always win.

Do you know what is more admirable more in poker than watching someone win it all? When one person is pushing so hard to win the pot that he goes on a betting craze trying to just make everyone fold and to this - you are contemplating... and the thought should probably be quite simple “If I fold now and throw this chance away, this idiot will be happy and I will be alright and I can live with that... I fold.” Less effort, still happy. Okay, if the idiot shows his hands in the end and is bluffing there is nothing you can do about it. He is a donkey, you are better than that. Of course, this is not to say we should give up all the time, if you really do have ‘The Nuts’ - the strongest possible hand in any given situation - Raise Hell!

7 days, 3 tow trucks and 1 major event later - here is the ending - happy ever afters? - let's hope three times a charm.

Since watching my first Star Wars movie - which is the Empire Strikes Back - I have always let it be know that I am a big Star Wars geekzilla. My massive Star Wars collection last addition is a replica of Darth Vader's light saber and a talking Yoda that tells you the story from Episode one to six - not forgetting the action figures that now sits in a drawer that I shall not open.

So I have never quite been into Star Trek (sorry M). The closest I ever got to purchasing something Star Trek was this special edition Barbie and Ken Star Trek dolls which I have every intention to mark-up and resale (which I didn't but I should have).

So I have watched 'Fanboys' and remembered, understood and connected with the zillions of Star Wars fans and why there is such a negative force-field against the 'Trekkies'.

However, with the new Star Trek movie opening tomorrow. I am actually excited. Perhaps indirectly it is because of Sheldon from 'The Big Bang Theory' or perhaps it is Mr 'Sylar' Quinto as Spock. Or perhaps it is because the last (supposed) great sci-fi franchise (SW Episode 1 to 3) disappointed me so much - and looking forward to the start (or re-start) of another - and deep down hoping that it will disappoint me more so that Episode 1 to 3 seem so much more enjoyable.

Silently, I do hope I do not become a 'Trekkie' but who knows until I boldly go where no SW fans have gone before - to the dark side with pointy ears and tights.

I have been informed and pinched by a good friend having not seen each other for sometime that I have gained significant weight. Funny, as I thought I was losing more - not that it really matters much. I haven't had a good nights sleep for sometime due to my irregular bio-clock that is reacting and acting erratic.

According to WebMD.com, sleeping more may/can actually cause you to lose more weight.

"One of the more interesting ideas that has been smoldering and is now gaining momentum is the appreciation of the fact that sleep and sleep disruption do remarkable things to the body -- including possibly influencing our weight," says David Rapoport, MD, associate professor and director of the Sleep Medicine Program at the New York University School of Medicine in New York City.

The pictures here were taken on my latest recce around Singapore. I don't really take pictures to begin with; often doing so for work or work related record purposes. Had the chance to work with some of the best photographers around ever since, but I was never quite pushed to make some of my own. Honestly, photography has not connected as much as how film does. Maybe because I am too lazy and would rather be an almost passive viewer and not 'immerse myself' with a single frame, although I know I can if I make a choice or choose to... then again, why should I?

We asked this question to our participants: Does a picture need to tell a story for you? Answers all mixed. Some really want their pictures to say something, some doesn't really care and just want the eye candy. Actually, the question is flawed and unfair, we were not asking the participant about how they feel - in actuality. The picture doesn't really care if it is going to tell a story for you. In itself and why it ever existed, telling a tale is it's sole purpose. Bad pictures tells stories, badder pictures tells stories too, 'long arm' shots of yourself meant for Facebook tells a story.

So why were these shots taken? I just wanted my laptop desktop to have wallpapers that I made myself. Do they tell stories? Ask them yourself.

My City Screams - for Help!

I am largely feeling depressed after watching 'The Spirit' earlier today. I am a big fan of Mr Frank Miller's works and I have to say it seems apparent now that that shall remain in print form in the likes of 'Sin City', 'The Dark Knight Returns' (which I insist that Chris Nolan's Batmobile was 'inspired by') and even 'Robocop'.

Frank Miller has always resisted having his works translated into film until Robert Rodriguez came along and convinced him to make 'Sin City' (they are planning to do a 2 and 3) and even co-directed a few scenes. Nicely done Bob, you've got him hooked. So it perhaps made Zack Snyder's life easier when he pitched '300'.

So dear Frank has now gotten his hands dirty and made 'The Spirit'. And back to his resistance on HIS work being translated, I would believe he has instead turn Will Eisner's grave over. 'The Spirit' begins strong enough, for maybe 2 mins, and started to look like Sin City film and then it became clear that it is NOT. It reminded me sorely of 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' if you can painfully remember that one. The plot just loses itself, the characters became desktop wallpaper that speaks emptiness and the visuals became a sad rip off. Translating the 1940s to modern day and being lost between the two became a sick joke. I just re-watched the trailer and notice critics calling it 'Movie of the Year'...etc. Ah, honesty.

Yes, sexy the women are, and great that the city screams - perhaps because this film was ever made. Dear Mr Eisner R.I.P.

Now I am just hoping that 'The Watchmen' will live up to its reputation - kind of worried after seeing the second trailer having been very impressed with the teaser trailer.

It has not been a great past few months. I have completely become nocturnal and just realized it is close to 8am and I have not slept the entire night. The last two weeks, I have been living in New York time in Asia. I don't make resolutions anymore as I don't keep them anyway. My answer to the resolution question the last few days was "My resolution for 2009 is 1080p." and I have been spending a lot of time in front of the plasma.

It has been a roller-coaster, 2008. Many highs and many lows. Emotionally and physically. Relationships and career. I began to think that 2008 feels like 10 years jammed packed into one. A year that went by with so much change - even without Obama using it as a slogan.

I would want '09 to be a little more grounded. Maybe because it is time to drop the "2" and enter into the "3". Someone once told me that as we get older, we start to lose 'friends' and the close ones (and real ones) becomes clearer and more preciously few. And I would like to thank them who have helped me 'survive' 2008.

It has been a while since the last time I actually wrote a proper blog entry. It is about 5.30am now and I just got back home. It is one of those nights that it doesn't feel at all like it is early morning.

We are in the second week of the theatrical release of "THE DAYS", we are still in the midst of our endless promotions and roadshows.

The last hour, I am thinking about the notion of time & place and how we can sometimes control how that works in one's favour. To be in the right place and right time is a real art form. Some may argue that it is luck but I beg to defer. I think it can be created either consciously or more often subconsciously. And I am not talking about work (Dear Ernest who is leaving for London today, I don't work all the time! And all the blessings for the year ahead!), I am thinking about relationships.

I just got something beautiful in an SMS, apparently the lyrics of a song "...The months they don't matter. It's the days I can't take. As hours turn to minutes and I'm seconds away." (Part of something I am working (shit working!) on which is now still a secret.)

I think procrastination should be one of the seven deadly sins.

If we are such great creatures of creation, can we then create the (impossible) place to best give a timely delivery? What if the entire time & place is perfect but the result is an infinite failure?

I am thinking about "No. 4" (my new short film) suddenly. I remember talking to Yann Yann about finite possibilities. A 'What-if' scenario - 'What if' we know the time & place of how we will eventually die - and knowing this early in our lives. Will we live any different;y? Will the maybe 70 years (or less) that we have on this world be put into better use? What will we do with our lives? What will we fight for? Who do we choose to love? Who do we have to leave behind?

I just re-read what i just wrote and I realise I am rambling aimlessly. I think I am feeling the morning on my face. Better go to sleep.

What the hell is Callzone?

Dear internet user,

In the early 1990s, we had a mini revolution. It was the time of the pagers and the first handphones. Those brick shaped ones that you will see on Channel 8 re-runs some late nights. What was the revolution? It was the introduction of the Callzone phones.

A slim, light weight, black, with a green rubber trimming (excuse) for a phone that can only be used within 'zones'. And you will see the privilege few carry this prized item and using them like it was the coolest thing around. And... usually, the Callzone areas have a row of coin phones nearby. But no, you have to be on the Callzone phones.

I don't remember being able to receive calls on them and my uncle had one. It was seriously one for the cool kid.

Just finished shooting over the weekend "The Days" movie's theme song 还我自由 (My Freedom) by Black Forest. Only one of the best rock bands in Singapore. Nic, April and myself spotted them at a mini concert at our friend's place Hark Music and have since fell in love with their music and passion. Thank you to Ernest, Iqbal, Adwin, Sky and Renhui - you guys are awesome. Working on the edit now, it is going to be something to watch out for.

Priorities. What comes first? Not everyone is a good at multitasking. "Time flies", "Minutes Count", "I want it yesterday!". We actually live for a very short time if you really start counting.

"No. 4" is part of the "Dystopia" film project helmed by 10 new Singaporean filmmakers. This, I have to admit, was done on a whim. I wrote something else for this segment, which started from interracial relationship to a crazy loner Superhero story, got back into the relationship mode after watching "The Home Song Stories" and "Little Children" and started stabbing the laptop with what eventually became this.

I have to really thank Chrissie, Nic and Mike for pulling all of us together. I have to admit also that I was a little reluctant at first because the rest of the guys have actually made films before and most have a formal education in film-making. So I wasn't very confident at first as I always serve as the producer. Very honoured to be part of this new brave group of film-makers.

Another person who really made this happen is Yann Yann. I sneakily slipped her the script one day, and she called back and said she read it twice over and really want to make this. Her energy and commitment really made me 'prioritize'. Thank you Yann!

"No. 4" is for all of us who do not have time. And looking forward to the other 8 films.

While we wait... for September

In less than 50 days, "The Days" will open in the cinemas. As we wait (desperately) for out ratings from the authorities there is just so much we can really do. Maybe this wait is a test of our faith; and a way for us to look back at the past years and see the friends we have made along the way.

Personally, I have never worked on such an ambitious project 'til date. It is amazing seeing people come together for this - to tell a simple story. I cannot fathom how it must be like for the production of "Red Cliff" who far exceed us by 100 folds.

Our editor and colourist have been working countless overnighters. Josef, Sokkuan who are helping us with the motion graphics and illustration to give the film that added oppm! are working tirelessly. Jim is writing the last song for the film to be sung by Adele. Chee Wei is still writing the music and scheduling the plan for the next month. For many, the journey ended on the last day of shoot - you guys are not forgotten. But for the last month, it is the work of the unsung heroes, people who will not appear on the film but brilliant craft and artistry will help finish the film - and make it into a movie.

Before starting, Boi, April and myself went to have our fortunes read. As predicted, the route to finishing this film is not going to an easy one. Everyone is constantly tested; and yes - we are all feeling the toil.

I haven't been sleeping well as we wait. 50 days to go. Thank you to all.

You can spent 6 months or even more planning and plotting the path to make a film but when it is crunch time... some things are just beyond your control. We have not release anything much about the new film but many perhaps know that it is being directed by Boi Kwong and produced by April Tong and myself. The teaser website (well, more like webpage) is at www.youknowthedays.com, and we are currently about 2 weeks into production.

Making a film is not without its moments - good ones, bad ones and so many things you learn along the wonderful journey and dealing with people. It is storytelling at its best, it is about people pouring their hearts and sweat out to make something happen. And it is magical.

Since we started principal photography 29 February, we have been facing the problem of the availability of one of the lead characters played by Derrick R. He is currently serving his national service but we have already secured the days that he needs to be around and the authorities are very supportive. With the escape of Mas Selamat on 27 February, it has cause us so much heartache trying to rearrange the schedules as Derrick's unit is on full alert. As his unit starts to stand down we are getting him back and shot a few crucial scenes with him in it already.

Yesterday (12 March), was the biggest blow to our morale with the unexpected March rainfalls. We wrapped early and took today off to recuperate as we approach a big set-up for the weekend.

I just spent the off day with Boi, the director and Jason Poh, the executive producer and Beng Huat, the director of photography at Iceberg, the post production house, going through the shots. It has definitely given us much needed boost as most of the shots looks great. Some of the performance by the actors just brought a smile of our faces and I especially like to say a "HOSAY!" to the art department and wardrobe department for helping all of us create the early nineties.

It is strange here where we move so fast that things just about 15 years ago are no longer around. Little things: the money we use, the way we stay connected with our mobile phones these days vs the pagers and call zone phones from back then. Even McDonald's have changed their identity so much that when art brought in the old paper cups, it brings back so much memories of the days spent 'studying' at Mac. And the fashion, you will not believe where the wardrobe guys manage to find all the clothes from then.

(I just realised writing this that no local film has touched 1989-1990...)

I will be away for the weekend attending the HongKong Filmart with Jason, so to the guys, good luck, keep the faith and rest well when you can.

SIFF: Coming of Age - Coming Soon

I remember the first time I watched a Singapore film it was at the SIFF. I wasn't such a big film buff until seeing the kind of films I have watched at the festival. The typical diet of big blockbusters and Asian flare was suddenly upset with films from another part of the world in languages that I don't understand. Small films with a lot of heart. Big films with a lot of soul. I do not profess to be an arthouse cinema lover (whatever that means). I have learnt and appreciated over the years the vast palette of films the festival has brought. I have to attribute my personal film journey to this every special event.

This year, at Sinema Old School we are presenting the Singapore Panorama - an unprecedented amount of works by Singapore filmmakers.

My wish is for the survival and revitalization of the Singapore International Film Festival, whether this ends up as the swan song let it then be a big number. Should this become a start of a real Singapore film industry, it will be something.

Thank you to all the people: to their persistent and belief - to the magic that is the SIFF.

The 1 Second Film is a non-profit global collaborative arts project. As a community, we are creating the World's Biggest Shortest Film. Anyone can produce our film by donating $1 or more- yes, even Kevin Bacon! We currently have 8,997 Producers from 56 countries, including many celebrities. The finished film will be 1 second of experimental animation followed by 90 minutes of credits. A feature-length 'making of' documentary will play during the credits, detailing our projects inspiring story. All profits raised by our finished film will be donated to charity. It's the start of a 5 Phase Plan to bring the world together, one-second at a time, using collaborative art to create social change.

In the world of warlords and superbeings, intelligent robots, mammoths and pyramids, man dresses as a bat and battling one of the greatest villains of all time, where do we stand. I am humbled everything a new trailer of a major blockbuster is released. These films are also made by humans, a lot of them and with a huge amount of cash. When would we ever get to make one (just for the sake of it) here on our island state?

Yes, we all know a good story sells - but it is more than that now more than ever. Every time I give a presentation to filmmakers or film lovers, the question that never fails to come up is "Why does all Singapore films have this 'Singaporean-ess' in them?" In which the answer (or question back) has been:"If the film is made here, why shouldn't it have its Singapore flavour?"

This has been bugging me the last few days after an interview with The Business Times together with other 'new' filmmakers.

Back to the first bit and this other nagging situation - If I pay S$9.50 to watch a big time blockbuster and be mindlessly entertained after a long week, why should do the same for a local film that is going to remind me of my meaningless and rather depressing state?

Films (or movies) - or rather going to a cinema - has become a way of escapism for many people. I am one of them too. It has become a natural choice. Here's the deal, after dinner, how about going for some drinks? Nay, driving later kana road block. So we go drink some coffee? Had too much, later cannot sleep, too crowded, smoking corner now always full. How about... what else is there? We natural don't watch plays, nothing much at the museums, library? must be kidding (has too much of that i school), go home (sian...). So movie quite safe right? No need to think, sneak in some Mos Burger corn soup, watch - laugh, cry, get scared, get excited, watch some hot celebs get down and dirty - shiok what.

So the filmmaker is torn. I really want to make my personal film or break some new barriers. Should I be concern if anyone watches my film? If so, how do I do that? Hardcore marketing doesn't even equal guaranteed viewership. So make a 'commercial' flick, what the hell does that even mean? I am not going there.

The current thinking of going to festivals and gaining some awards so that maybe only maybe someone would pick up the film here is not going to be viable very soon. If you do not have people who put in money to worry about, that's fine and dandy. But what if you did? Make it cheap. Sure - than what? Then fuck lah make if for S$10 million - then what?

I started this post without a real purpose. Maybe I just wanted to know our place and perhaps writing it and coming back a while later may help. Maybe I just needed to get this off my chest and move on. Maybe someone out there has an answer. Ya lah, smart aleck can say make films so difficult, don't make lor.

Of Placards and Petitions

Something came to mind. We have become so adamant in making (positive) changes that we believe change involves petitions, open letters, blogs and the mass email. The double-edged sword of 'New Media' which has been so much in discussion seems to be the way to "make yourself heard" in the less money-spent-way as possible (and getting really popular very quickly).

The back-fire of rejections of personalities like Mr Brown and recently Ms Catherine Lim for their views has instead sparked off bush fire on www. In the silliness of the entire episode, being rejected seems to be the way to reach an even bigger audience.

Freedom, openness, fairness and reformation are too big-a-word for the frog in the well. What do we want? What is making us so upset in the first place? And just what the hell are we fighting for? What birth rights are we really denied?

Change only happens when enough people believe. And more than that - more than signing a letter and so much more than adding your comments on a post - it requires us be sure that that change can actually better and benefit everyone. That of course is not possible in the first place. (Where I am going with this as I rant seems to be going no where. And there seems to be no real point in this post, but hey, welcome to the blogging world.)

Personally, it all just seems very passive.

I think the idea is to conform differently. You can only evoke positivity if you are in the system and not out of it. As an artist, it has never occurred to me that defying conventions is the route to take - rather, it is embracing conventions and working with the constraints that makes the work or cause more interesting. With complete freedom, things are not believable. And I for one am more skeptical about the intent of the individual than the collective.

A world without leaders would not be something I am up for. A world without middle-management - maybe.

Newness and being Comfortablly Challenge

I have a confession to make: I feel most at ease when there is something new in my life - disclaimer: I am not referring to relationships here. Simple NEW things, like when Twiggy (the car) gets a new shine or when I get new shoes or a new DVD boxed set (Transformers 2 disc set is out). And there is this other thing when getting something new, like when you get to open the (damn) plastic wrap and removing the (disgusting) price tags. Newness can come also old things - like getting a vinyl record or laserdisc (the big ones yes) of a great film just for the sake of it.

Newness can very comforting.

The fixation with newness on the broader spectrum may not be so. Don't we just love the idea of spending millions on a beautiful (usually fully glass windows these days) building (facade) or landscaping or both - only to realised that a. We don't need the new building in the first place. b. The monumental structure that gave way to this newness need not be pulled down. c. The maintenance bill for a fully glass cascade in an equatorial country wastes more paper.

Newness comes with a price tag.

PS: The new space at Old School is coming along. (Looking at the red seating and putting up the banner, gleaming like a proud parent.) We should be operational in a couple of weeks to fit the kinks. The other office in Katong will be undergoing a face lift soon. None of which gave way to an previous structure, both kind of in a conservation bit and no glass cascade.

Confession #02: I have this (almost) sick obsession to fight as the underdog. There is really no fun if you have the means to succeed - by which I mean monetary. It is when you are low on funds and have no idea what KPI means that makes it interesting. 6 years ago, my design agency was started with a 12" Mac, a box of Adobe software and a printer. We have not grown to a huge agency with big accounts - which is something we don't really want actually. What is interesting is always the pitches against the 'big' boys and winning the account. Haha!

Then there is film-making. The almost impossible in our country to make a buck but the crazy nature to want to keep making them. And the good fight against all odds to get the word out of what the hell we are up to.

Challenges can be very comforting.

Just got a call a few nights back from an old friend who I have not met up with for a long time (try 10 odd years). Chat. Chat. And this popped out: "You are always up to strange things." No, I am not. I think I am doing things and making thinks happen - things that have not happened before - and it is not strange, it is challenging.

When you have an idea and everyone else thinks it wouldn't work it means only 2 things - the idea is crap or it is something special. Either way, you have a 50:50 chance. Look, I am not totally stupid here. The odds on this is much better than striking TOTO or even 4D. And usually, it is a calculated risk - not pure calculation - as most people would know I can't count very well. And most importantly, it is fun, it is different and (sounding like a warp record) it is challenging.

Being comfortably challenge is different (obviously) from the usually 2 state that one could be in. Uncomfortably Challenge - must be damn stressed. And I think worst: Uncomfortably UnChallenge.

So I am kicking back tonight as I prepare for the weekend. It is going to be a long one, packing and moving the office and may be helping in a shoot. I still have the new(ness) DVD and some Scrabulous to challenge.

"Oh! You must be kidding! F#@K!" As heard driving out of town towards the east yesterday on the ECP. Couldn't help but notice a brand new ERP gantry erected over the flyover into the ECP bridge. "Traffic congestion affects the quality of life and the environment as well as the overall efficiency and productivity of the economy." Sure, so the richy poos who are not bothered by this gets to go home early to the family.

Scenario: If one is to work at Plaza Singapura and drives to work in the morning - kana one gantry on the ECP, the second one just after the Rochor exit and a third near Fort Canning. And leaving on the dot for home would meant one KNN one just outside The Cathay, then maybe can avoid a second but one just before entering ECP. Of course, going done the very jammed up Beach Road is one option and there is Nicoll Highway, no gantry yet right? Wait Ophir Road has another one. Ass!

Of course we have public transport, also got fare changes. Then maybe we carpool. Or maybe we just stay in town for drinks - cannot, later kana caught drink driving. So how? Stay in town watch movie, expensive popcorn and equally expensive parking. Just wait for 8pm lor. Then next time "Traffic congestions after 8pm has prompted the LTA to increase the evening ERP to 10pm." Then the taxi's all disappear.

This is perhaps the resolution - move offices out of town. Since rental prices are sky high anyway. Then Ubi, Eunos (already jam spots), Tampines and Changi prices goes up some more. Then cause more congestions. Solution. Simple - more ERP.

I suggest we go all go Green. Get a bicycle. (But that may eventually lead to an IU unit installed on the bikes). Forget it. I am going to work from home.

I must say, it looks potentially a very good take. Iron Man has always been one of my favourites, often under-rated largely due to the nonsensical villians (Living Laser, Spymaster?) he faces. The whole Civil War really put me (and I believe a lot of fans) on the Captain's side.

And in dramatic fashion, with over a hundred people in sight shooting his new secret project. There was joy, some tears, lots of cheering and HD-captured in full glory - from a crane.

R.I.P. Freehand: The End of An Era

We first met briefly when you were then known as Aldus Freehand 4.0. Back then, there was also Coral Draw and some others that I can't remember. I was just starting out and never got into you very much. The people around me then always encourage me to have a go with Coral - believe me, I never quite enjoyed the experience. I stuck to pen & paper for a while.

It was in 1996 that we were formally introduced, you have changed your name to Macromedia Freehand 5 or was it 5.5? I can't recall.You were stunning. I have never tried enjoyed working and building a relationship with anything else quite like you. The control you have, the flexibility. I remembered the multiple times I tried to push to to your limits, man those were the days, you came through. Every single time. I mean we have our ups and downs, you don't listen very much, you fall and crash sometime and refuse to accept some types, but we eventually got through, didn't we?

All the times when people asked. How did you do that? And my reply was by Freehand. They were shocked. Freehand? By hand? They really don't know you and what you can do.

Remember you tried to be transparent? That didn't work for you, but you tried. And the gradients that you attempted. It didn't quite work, did it? And your colours, sometimes, really not great. But you knew what came through right? Unlike the others out there, you offered the multiple pages that I so need. Your alignment was simply perfection; and no one else up to this day made it better. Your tools were the easiest to use. When I finally got my Wacom, I did the first test with you and the strokes were so great. And you cut & paste so well. There were many things I don't need with you, like when you tried to split animations with your layers to fit into Flash. That was silly.

One thing I really enjoyed about you, every time you change, it was for the better. I really love you as Freehand 9. You got so in tune with my needs. I was even trying to create your new cool title look with what you have on hand, and I got quite close. Your clipping paths still didn't work as well, but who cares. Some types just don't get along with you, it is fine by me.

You have never ceased to surprise me even up till this day. There is always something new you can do that I never realised. I doubt I can ever stop finding out more about you.

My final upgrade was from Freehand 10 to Freehand MX. I was still wondering what you would be next MX2, MXii or MY? I guess we will never know. When word got out the Adobe may be your new first name, I had my fingers-crossed. Somehow, I was preparing myself. You were too much of a threat to the others. They have tried but somehow always fall short. Here, amongst your biggest fans and loved ones, we always draw the comparison - I am sorry we do that, but it is how it is - "Why can't you just align like Freehand?" "Why can't I place my files in you and trust you with it like with Freehand?"

I am trying to switch from my paths to this new (faint) outline. It is just not the same.

You are simply unique. And I will always remember you.

PS: Well, the good thing is, now that you wouldn't be changing or upgrading. I will be saving quite a bit. Your functions are near perfect. So I will still hold on and many of us who truly believes in you, will hold on, as long as we can.

Took me a while to get this link, until I started reading the Heroes online novels. As a big 'Heroes' fan-geek, always wondered why they only have 'Wireless' in 2 short scenes in the series. I mean, what a hotty!

Well, the truth is, there are grand plans for her life - online. We earlier heard that Johhny Depp (chichi) was going to play Freddie Mercury in the biopic. Damn, I was so looking forward to that. News or rumors just in, producers have just dropped the Captain and looking at signing Sasha Baron Cohen - NICE how much?

How this then: Producers are going after Johnny Depp (Ed Wood, Epic Movie) to play in the new Borat and Bruno (Sasha's flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion reporter) movie, the sequel to last year's highly rated documentary Borat! Meanwhile in a tradition of the land-of-dreams turn of events, the role of Johnny Depp in his bopic will be played the multi-award winning Sasha Baron Cohen (Paradise Now), who beat contenders like Ben Stiller (Zoolander) and Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier's Entourage). "Borat and Burno" will be produced at USD400 million, making it the biggest film ever. For the fans, Wildstorms' The Authority series was started by the team of Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch who incidentally killed off the previous Stormwatch unit and placed the fate of the planet (and its many dimensions) in the hands of The Authority, a team of supers that will do anything to save us. And I mean anything - which includes wiping over thousands in the River Thames.

Then led by the Spirit of the 20th Century Jenny Sparks (think of her as a incarnation of a chain-smoking Keira Knightley from Domino) with the team of Jack Hawksmoor, Swift, The Doctor, The Engineer and the controversial gay couple Midnighter and Apollo, a Batman and Robin/Nightwing/Superman pastiche. After the first series (spoiler alert: death of Jenny Sparks), the new team of Mark Millar and (one of my favourites artist) Frank Quitely continued the story with the team battling a thinly disguised The Avengers in our little island of Singapore and eventually saved the reincarnation of Jenny Sparks.

I have stopped reading this series since that last arc by Millar and Quitely as the series faced heavy censorship and much controversy post 9-11, and the story seems to lost its spark. It has been one of my all time favourite series along with Watchmen, Rising Stars and Frank Millar's Dark Knight.

In recent times, Jenny Quantum (the child saved by the team earlier) has grown up. And just like Ms Jenny Sparks who dons a Union Jack t-shirt, she wears in a manner reminiscent our nation flag. Our very own ass-kicking superhero. I have not started on this new arc myself so I have no idea what it is about. So guys with 1819, please take note.

Perhaps our Tourism Board should note this as well.

I Lost All My Contact Numbers

It is official. I lost all my numbers on my phone. Sent it in to the care center and I thought I've sync it with my Mac or backup it up in my sim card. Nope. So if you call me and I do not know who you are, I honestly lost your number. Call on my phone this afternoon:

Caller: "Hi. I am having wan-ton mee... below your office..."

®: "Ah. Sorry, I lost my numbers on my phone. Who's this?"

Caller: "Hey! That's my line."

It is my fault yes. I am sorry.

I am reading up on what is going on with our weather of late. Was watching CNA and what was said was that we have come to point where we have to figure out what to do to live with global warming because it is may be too late to make significant change.

[Personally, I like the cool (or even cold) weather we are experiencing of late, the wetness is not a real turn off. It is next few months where it will be extremely hot that is worrying me]

So there is this Climate Crisis educator resource from the An Inconvenient Truth web that is very good read. Then I looked up and saw this line: "Movies have the power to inspire. You have the power to act. Participate!"

Was just sharing with Darren and Jolene today about this new project that I want to work on while I am travelling the next 2 weeks. So I have my trusty camera with me and I promised to act on it.

Project Ultraman

Just got back from Bangkok with Nic, Chris and Alfred. We were invited to the set of the new Ultraman Television Series produced by Chaiyo Productions. Announced just 2 weeks ago, this mega production will be starring Hong Kong Actor Ekin Cheng 郑伊健 as one of the Ultraman and featuring a cast from China, Thailand and Hong Kong. Brilliant visuals from Director Perasit Saengduenchai shot completely on High-Def.

"We really wanted the Ultraman fight scenes to look enormous and grand, the camera angles gives that perspective from the ground looking up or from the top looking down." says Parasit."It is the way I have always envisioned Ultraman, larger than life."

Something to look forward to in April 2007. Just have our fingers crossed that our television stations will pick it up. Other else, we have to tune to RTM3 once again.

I have been really not feeling very well the last 2 weeks. My gastric has been acting up once again and looks like I have a specialist appointment in December. sigh.

Many good things have happened since my last post. Caffeine has relaunched our new website which is now in a blog format. Just got too tired of any wanted something functionable, figured if the work is good, there will be reactions. If it is bad, even more. Sean and Cheryl will be on shoot next week. And we've got spankin' new namecards.

Formally started working on Addicted Entertainment with Chris. Great projects are happening for us here; More great stuff happening next year. Watch the spaces.

Originasian Pictures has taken on the task to try to bring the film industry (as well as music) together with Sinema.sg. Becoming Royston just got nominated in 3 catergories in the Asian Festival of First Films. Nic is coming back from Europe soon. Got the rough cut of the 90min version ready. Tears will flow.

Still waiting for 1819 to get back into action.

It may be a little early to look back on the year; if anything, it has been extremely eventful. I was a little jaded 2 weeks ago, slightly overwhelmed by the commitments I have. A client was asking me what do I do exactly, I said it really depends which hat you want me to wear. A graphic designer, a filmmaker, a marketing consultant, an event organiser, soon to be music producer, creative industry advocator. It has been a busy year, it has been a good year. I am overwhelm and deeply respect the people I worked with. They are the backbone of these slightly crazed antics. Thank you so much for making everything possible.

Little do many know, it has been a tough past 2 months (in terms of money) for me. There was a day when I had only $2 left in the bank. But you've got so many things going on what? Sure rich one mah! Actually, being in that state causes you to be more daring and creative. It makes you wonder what the hell am I doing, making so many things happen. Where do I find the time and energy to do all the stuff. You know what, try it for yourself. It can be done. And there is another kind of feeling of triumph at the end of the road. I am not there yet, hardly there. But it feels good, it feels alive.

I stand by the belief that creativity knows no bound. We are only restricted by our self doubts and well, ourselves. There is really nothing to lose, besides some sleepless nights like this one. (And maybe developing some gastric problems.)

So to the year 2006. The year I am proud to have lived and still living. And to 2007, where the world will go into economic depression and this crazy person will make 2 films (or 3), 1 reality programme, 2 concerts (at least), 1 major kick-ass event in town, more books, more posters, throw some more great parties, help cut a music album, start a revival in the films and the creative industry, fight against global warming, help animals find a home, learn a new language, tell my family I love them although I seldom see them and keep the same girl and loving her to bits.

Parking at Ean Kiam Place

Ean Kiam Place, the office for the last 3 years, has been developing into a mini creative hub. With neighbours like Stikfas, Visibility, Egg Creative, Rapture Gaming, and most recently The Lawn. Mostly attracted by the cool restored 2 storey shophouses and the afforadable rental.

Parking has always been a problem because it is one of those FREE PARKING AFTER 5PM URA lots and the Katong eateries are just round the corner, the Laksa and the Ba-Chuo Mee.

So I am the kind who pops into the office, goes out for appointments, and pop back in. I have the URA season parking but often no lots are available. So I will just park across the lane on the double yellow lines and look out for the attendants, then run down the stairs and stop them before they can execute the fingers of damnation.

The other day, the usual. "Hey, someone is going to book your car!" I ran down to see this PREMAS attendant on his cool new bike. He was nice enough, like most of them in the area strangly, to not book me, it is like a common understanding. But this was the best bit.

"Brother, you can park in front. At the space between Odeon Katong and Ean Kiam."

"Are you sure? That place got NO PARKING sign on the wall."

"No problem. Park there." and smiled.

So I drove the car 10m in front.

"Are you sure or not?" I asked

" Ya lah, don't worry can one."

"But... there is a fire hydrant here."

"Oh, is it? Then move your car back a bit lah." he said.

"There is the NO PARKING sign if I move back."

"Aiyah, don't worry lah. I will not book you."

"You sure ah."

"Yes. That one not my area. Only the TP (Traffic Police) will book you. Park lah."

"..."

I think I will get my season parking from The Odeon Katong Shopping Centre hence forth.

Finally, getting a bit of time to write again. I was asked the question by an interviewer "What do you love about Singapore?". Seriously, I can't really remember what I answered, only because I was trying to translate from English to Mandarin. So now thinking back, I would have said this. “I love Singapore because it is my home. My roots are here, my friends and family are here. I was watching the BBC documentary “Singapore” and was pleasantly surprised by the many things I do not know about my own country. Why is it that we all need a foreign perspective for us to realized how interesting we really are. Singapore, as it began was a rebel, Raffles was a rebel. Yes, I would love to get jobs from all over the world and be able to travel and work – but this is my home. If you ask me if I am a stayer, I would say I am torn. We have to find the worms and bring them back to the nest. But you have to build the nest first. I will stay and make my mark, then I would like to go and stamp our mark everywhere. (see 1819Supermovement ) Dare I say most of us love our country. But we do not necessarily have to fly a flag out of our window once a year to announce our pledge. I am proud to have been educated in both English and Mandarin. When I was on a plane to New York, I am helping the old Chinese couple beside me translate to the foreign cabin crew. Ming was telling me that he has a new project in mind. A “I am Singaporean” sticker or decal. Would I paste it up, hell yes! I may not fly the flag, but a sticker, alright! “I love Singapore, but Singapore may not love me back.” said Nic Chee. I agree.

The film, ‘Becoming Royston’, is a story of “self exploration, discovery and liberation, which explores relationships between people, conflicts, insecurities, hopes and dreams, you and me.”

The story revolves around the coming of age of Tan Boon Huat (Alvin Neo), the middle child of a prawn farmer whose family resides on an island town. Nicknamed ‘Hei Bee’ (shrimp in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect) Boon Huat’s time as a child to adolescence was one that was filled with oppression, often receiving harsh treatment from his own father (William Chua). Boon Huat eventually leaves the island with the help of his friend and confidante, the island boatman (Tay Kay Chin). On the mainland, he meets a girl (Oon Shu An) while working in a video shop. Boon Huat starts to discover his dream of becoming a filmmaker with the help of his new found ‘love’.
